Carbon sequestration capability and strategies for carbon stock restoration in a degraded landscape of south-eastern Amazonia

Riassunto: The objective of this contribution is to suggest strategies for the restoration of forest carbon stock in a degraded landscape in south eastern Amazonia. We focused our attention on the municipality of Moju in the Brazilian state of Parà where a fast development of human activity led to rapid deforestation in the last decades. Deforestation is associated to the expansion of the urban area of Moju, the spread of an extensive primary and secondary road network, the expansion of cropland and cattle ranching, resulting in high fragmentation of primary forest. This degradation reflects that of the other Brazilian states located along the southern and eastern extent of the Brazilian Amazon. The continuous forest loss and subsequent land use changes lead to irreparable loss of habitat and biodiversity, making significant contribution to carbon emissions an to forest carbon stock decrease. The understanding of social and environmental issues in this area is essential for planning sustainable and innovative development models, respecting local cultures, with the aim of improving living conditions of local people, with full regard for environmental values and also to preserve and restore the role of forests in the carbon cycle and biodiversity conservation. Any action for the recovery and the preservation of the Amazon biome and biodiversity is expected to produce positive effects in terms of carbon storage. In order to achieve this objective, we chose an experimental area representative of the socio-economic and environmental condition of the region and we achieved the following results: the estimation of deforestation in the municipality of Moju through remote sensing analysis and by retrieving existing spatial databases available for the Amazon region; the estimation of the capability of carbon storage of the experimental area; the design of a recovery model for the restoration of forest carbon stock for the degraded experimental area. The results showed that deforestation rate has slowed down in last years in the municipality of Moju, although the estimation of deforested area for the year 2008 was amounting to 41% of the municipal territory. Every year, about 90-100 km2 of the municipal territory are deforested leading to a loss of primary forest, land use changes, land degradation, increasing the territorial fragmentation and contributing to carbon emissions. Basing on land cover/land use map produced and considering available literature we estimated a carbon stock for the experimental area amounting to over 0.65 million tonnes on the 7700 ha analysed. We estimated that about a half of this carbon is contained in forest ecosystems with low or medium degree of deforestation. However, a perfectly preserved land would be capable of a double potential of carbon sequestration, reaching around 1.3 million tonnes of carbon. Considering the current federal law of the “legal reserve”, programs of forest recovery must be accomplished by confining any agricultural land use to 20% of a degraded area, following a recovery of 80% of forest land. Under such circumstances, it is estimated a potential of total carbon stock major of 1.0 million tonnes. We propose and discuss a model for the restoration of the degraded area of Moju, designed to maximize the perspectives for the restoration and conservation of local biodiversity, while minimizing the application costs. Furthermore, the strength and innovation of the model is based on the analysis and restoration of the ecological network for rebuilding areas of high natural value.
