Effects of long term soil nitrogen fertilizations on Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong) Carr.) plantation ecosystems.

Riassunto: Nitrogen (N) is a basic element for plant nutrition and growth of forest ecosystems in the world. Despite of the great abundance of N in the atmosphere, many ecosystems are N limited, especially temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. On the other hand, where N supply exceeds biological demand, chronic N inputs may cause decline in forest productivity and experience greater mortality, acidification and loss of soil nutrients. Although the effects of N addition on plant physiology have been widely studied in controlled conditions, only few long-term studies have been carried out in forests. The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the effects of repeated N addition on Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong) Carr.) plantation ecosystems. The study has been performed at five different sites in Northern East Scotland on 23 to 31 years-old Sitka Spruce artificial stands subjected to repeated fertilization treatments since plantation up to the age of 16-20 years. Treatments consisted in the supply of N to the soil (as UREA, from 150 to 160 kg of N ha-1 per time), alone or in combination with P, K or both. The results of the effects of soil N fertilizations on soil C stocks, above-ground and ground vegetation biomass, pattern on long-term growth will be discussed. These results will be also compared to the most important N fertilization experiments made in United Kingdom on Sitka Spruce plantations.
