Study of bud burst in a full-sib family of black poplar (Populus nigra L.)

Riassunto: Bud burst is a distinct adaptive trait of perennial plants during the seasonal growth cycle of trees. From the biological point of view, it is of high interest to pay more attention on all the process of bud burst rather than on single phases as has been previously done. For this purpose, a specific protocol has been developed to dissect the different phases of the process, from break of buds (phase 1) to leaf formation (phase 5), passing through intermediate stages. The aim of this study was also to improve our knowledge about the genetic control of the bud burst process in a full-sib family of black poplar (Populus nigra). Genetic variability and broad sense heritability were estimated for each phase of the process. The results have demonstrated the existence of important genotypic differences in the poplar full sib family. Although temperature is widely accepted to be the main environmental signal for bud burst in perennial plants, its influence on the dynamics of bud burst in poplar was monitored during the different phases in order to characterize the kinetics of the different phenological stages. These results provide new insights into the study of the bud burst phenology in poplar allowing QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci) mapping associated to these traits.
