Abstract: The monitoring of Protected Areas is nowadays one of the main aims of local, national and international Institutions conserving and managing the natural resources. In this context, the recent studies of applied ecology focus the research on methods able to habitats identification, monitoring and management through the use of eco-indicators. The multifunctionality of eco-indicators is well know, particularly to monitor the tendencies of ecological factors such as climate, soils, disturbances and provide early sign of change. The ecosystemic approach is the most suitable for detecting changes in species and communities along spatio-temporal gradients and at different scale levels. This approach was utilized in this study to evaluate the conservation status of a Natural Reserve: “Macchia di Gattaceca and Macchia del Barco”, near Rome, completely surrounded by an anthropic matrix, increasing over time. This protected area represents some patches of ancient woodlands that covered the entire territory of Cornicolani Mountains.
