Abstract: Zinc (Zn) is one of the most prevalent essential heavy metals and plays important functions in more than 300 enzymes. Although Zn is an essential microelement for all organisms, the optimal concentration range is relatively small and toxicity symptoms due to supra-optimal concentrations can be quickly reached in plant organs. Excesses of Zn can cause several metabolic impairments, and be antagonistic to absorption of other essential elements due to transport and competition for storage space. Plants appear to use the same basic mechanisms to respond to excess micronutrients such as Zn in regulating heavy metal interactions (absorption, accumulation and defence). Plants have evolved three main strategies for heavy metal interactions including indicators, excluders, and hyperaccumulators. High biomass tree species, such as poplar, are generally thought to have a metal indicator phenotype with differential Zn accumulation in tissues and organs depending on clone and growth conditions. In previous works we used the poplar hybrid (Populus × euramericana) clone I-214 as a model system for studying the tolerance mechanisms to excess metal and nutrient impairments from physiological, morphological and molecular points of view. To evaluate the phytoremediation capability of Populus spp. a hydroponic screening for Zn tolerance, accumulation and translocation was performed using I-214 in comparison with other tree poplar clones.
