Riassunto: In this study forest stand dynamics of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) - European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest type - are examined in their structure and tree species composition. Two study areas, one in Molise Region in Italy (Abeti Soprani) and one in Dinaric Mountains in Slovenia (Leskova dolina or Draga), are compared in their long-term dynamics and in their present structure. Long-term stand dynamics were analysed using archival data from old forest management plans, while the present structure and composition is evaluated on a 1-ha plot in each study area. Data on dbh structure and tree species composition were also collected from old forest management plans. Sampling activities on 1-ha plots involved the collection of several data, as living trees parameters (tree species, DBH, height, etc.), data on dead wood occurrence, as standing dead wood, snags, dead downed trees, lying coarse woody debris and stumps (tree species, diameter, height or length, decay level) and also dendrochronological data. Dendrochronological data were useful to integrate stand structural data with forest age composition. Moreover, analyses on past climatic data sets (temperature, precipitation, etc.) were used to evaluate their influence on structure and composition of forest stands. The main aim of this study is to understand if variations in structure and composition of these forest stands are related to climate change through integration of the collected dataset.
