Photosynthetic and growth responses of two italian Tamarix spp. provenances to flooding and salinity

Riassunto: Impacts of climate change, expected in the Mediterranean coastal areas and, therefore in Italy, principally consist in the increase of sea level, which might have an effect on water tables’ quality, and the increase of flood events, as a consequence of an increased frequency of intense rainfalls. As a result, high salt concentration, particularly NaCl, and low availability of soil oxygen, both discriminating plant distribution, will affect coastal and riverine environments. Salt and flooding tamarisk’s tolerance is already well known, but scarce literature is available on Italian Tamarix provenances. Our work has been focused on the study of two ecologically different Tamarix spp. provenances; the first was collected along the bank of river Simeto (37°24’01’’ N, 15°04’04’’ E, East Sicily, Italy), while the other on the salty Baratz lakeshore (40°40’48’’ N, 8°13’34’’ E; Northwest Sardinia, Italy). The main objective of this study was to identify photosynthetic and growth responses of two different Tamarix provenances, to constant (45 days) flooding with fresh and salty water (NaCl 200 mM). For this purpose, several biometric parameters were measured (shoot length growth, leaves length, sprout number per plant and their death rate) as well as photosynthetic parameters (A400, Ci/Ca, Vcmax, Jmax, gs, WUEi, R, Fv/Fm and Φ). Both provenances were tolerant to flooding with fresh water, but a different response was observed to salty water flooding. More precisely, Simeto provenance didn’t show any alteration of photosynthetic parameters, while Baratz genotypes had higher sprout death rate and, in younger leaves, lower assimilation, decreased carboxylation rate and electrons transport, as well as lower Fv/Fm.
