Structure, spatial patterns and disturbance history in old-growth forests: the reserve of Lom (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Riassunto: Structure, spatial patterns and disturbance history were analysed in the mixed beech (Fagus sylvatica), silver fir (Abies alba), and Norway spruce (Picea abies) forest reserve of Lom (Bosnia Herzegovina). In central and southern Europe remnants of relative undisturbed native forests are rare and are very important both for scientific (research sites) and cultural (conservation, biodiversity, legacies) purposes. Forty-one circular plots (14 m radius), regularly spaced (120 m grid) were sampled in the core area of the Reserve (about 66 ha). Besides in a representative old-growth stand a 1 ha permanent plot was established for intensive sampling and long-term monitoring. The whole core area is very rich both in living biomass and in coarse woody debris. The highest value of living biomass was found in the permanent plot (1158 m3ha-1 and 383 m3ha-1 of coarse woody debris, approximately 33% of living trees). The largest trees (silver fir) have a dbh>120 cm, the highest trees (Norway spruces) are higher than 48 m and the oldest trees (silver fir) are more than 450 years old. Age structure indicates variable but rather continuous recruitment. Overall we found little evidence for stand-level disturbance or large gap dynamics. All the three species seem to be able to regenerate and persist in the stand in the absence of intermediate and/or major disturbances. The endogenous mortality appears to be the main driving factor shaping forest dynamics. This type of disturbance history is relatively rare if compared with other old-growth remnants from central and southern Europe that are characterized mainly by large or intermediate disturbances. The single tree replacement dynamic places this stand at the far end of a gradient from forests controlled by large, stand replacing disturbances to those where very small-scale processes predominate.
