Establishment of a planted area with Mediterranean shrubs in Sardinia and its evaluation for climate mitigation and to combat desertification in semi-arid regions

Riassunto: In the present work the project and the realization of a test-site for land revegetation in arid lands are described, with the aim to mitigate global change and combat desertification. The area is located in north-west Sardinia, with a typical Mediterranean climate. The plantation was realized in February 2006, with autochthonous species (Juniperus phoenicea, Pistacia lentiscus and Rosmarinus officinalis). Three densities (2x1.5 m; 2x2; 2x1.5 m) and three specific compositions (monospecific plots with P. lentiscus, monospecific plots with J. phoenicea and mixed plot with the three cited species) were combined. Soil cores were sampled in order to analyze the initial content in carbon and nitrogen. Three surveys were realized, in order to monitoring plant survival. After one month from the plantation, almost all plants were alive, but after summer the mortality increased, with reduction of living plants by about 50% for J. phoenicea and R. officinalis and more than 80% for P. lentiscus. Above- and belowground biomasses were estimated by allometric regressions. In February total aboveground biomass was in the range 0.4-3.4 g m2, according to the densities. Belowground biomass was in the range 0.2-1.6 g m2. In October, because of the high mortality of plants, the total biomass decreased by 50%. CO2 efflux was measured by a portable infrared gas analyzer. Soil CO2 efflux varied between 0.8 and 2.5 µmol CO2 m2 s-1. The need of selected seedling and good practices for planting, in addition to the best season of planting, resulted as basic rules for the success of soil recover and restoration in the Mediterranean area. This study investigated the first steps of restoration processes; given the short period of observation and the slow rate of the changes both in C stock and in soil cover, only the likely future scenarios will be reported in this poster.
