Riassunto: The CONECOFOR programme includes 31 forest monitoring plots located throughout Italy, with the first 20 ones installed in 1995. A number of attributes related to the biological, chemical and physical components of the concerned forest ecosystems were measured on a plot basis. Routine measurements included tree condition, tree growth, forest structure, plant species diversity, foliar nutrition, deposition chemistry, ozone, meteorology. On a less regular basis also soil chemistry, other gaseous air pollutants, deadwood, forest invertebrates, and landscape features were measured. The 1995-2005 time series obtained from the original set of 20 plots have been recently studied in the framework of the Integrated and Combined (I&C) evaluation system of the programme. The I&C system aimed at integrated analyses of the data collected by CONECOFOR. Its concept wish to combine different evaluation perspectives: risk assessment, status and changes and nature of changes. In the present study, each investigation team involved in CONECOFOR selected a set of key attributes in relation to four main issues of concern for the programme: forest health, biodiversity, air pollution and climate change. Then, these indicators were investigated in relation to change and trend detection on a plot basis and by means of different parametric and non-parametric techniques. Finally, a core set of these attributes underwent to an integrated analysis by means of PCA, PARAFAC (parallel factor analysis) and Mahalanobis distance in order to identify significant deviation from a given reference status. The reference status was set as the status as measured at the beginning of the monitoring period and its limit was set on a statistical basis (Hotelling T2 and Q; 2-times the standard deviation for the Mahalanobis distance). By this way it remain possible to identify unusual variation outside and inside the model, i.e. the set of expectations originated by the reference data. A number of year-by-year variation and directional changes have been detected. As an example, the former include mostly tree condition and species diversity and the latter atmospheric deposition and tropospheric ozone. In this paper, results will be summarized and discussed in relation to the relevant environmental issues of concern.
