Patterns of recruitment of Q. pubescens Willd. in old fields

Riassunto: In the last 50 years, the Italian landscape has been strongly modified by the abandonment of cultivation practices. Successions starting from old fields have led or are leading to the formation of woods and this phenomenon involves many areas. For this reason, the relevant mechanisms have to be carefully analysed. In relation to this problem, an analysis was made of the effects of different factors such as proximity of adult plant dispersers, activity of seed predators, competition and facilitation from other plant species. In three sites near Bologna (Italy) where cultivation practices have been abandoned for 6-12 years, the characteristics of the spatial distribution and the age structure were studied of seedling and sapling populations of Q. pubescens (a very important species in the Northern Apennine woods). Colonisation of the sites by Q. pubescens starts from the moment of abandonment, but the age structures of all three sites show a strong prevalence of the 1-2 year old individuals due to a high mortality rate after the third year. The predator-disperser activity is concentrated on the edge zone, close to the wood, which is rich in seedlings and saplings with an aggregated structure and a diversified age structure. Vegetation, and in particular its structural-functional characters (defined by the functional groups to which the species present belong), plays an important selective role for Q. pubescens seedlings and saplings, acting on their number and establishment capabilities. It can exert either a facilitation or a competition action, depending on the structural-functional characteristics of the microsites where it is organised.
