Riassunto: The aim of the project FORMAT (EU, ENV4-CT97-0641) is to assess the sensitivity of tree-growth to climate change in different ecological and geographical situations in forest ecosystems of southern Europe, both in its past variability and in the future as predicted by climate models for a CO2 doubling scenario. The project FORMAT is focused in the Mediterranean region. Forecasting impact of future climate change on ecosystems requires plenty information about the past. Instrumental data are not sufficient because they are contemporaneous with industrial activities that are held responsible for the present climate change. The study of past climates and environment distribution and variations at any time scale, and in particular the inter-annual variations enables a better understanding of the present climate and environment variability beyond any human intervention. Such information makes possible to understand more accurately possible changes in future and so, to mitigate the consequences on environment.
