Competizione per l’acqua in modelli colturali agroforestali di noce (Juglans sp.p.) per la produzione legnosa

Riassunto: Agroforestry cultural models include the intercropping of trees and herbaceous crops. Since early ’90s, the CNR Istituto per l’Agroselvicoltura, has been working on agroforestry cultural models of walnut (Juglans sp.p.) for high quality wood production. Experimental plantations have been established in a hilly area of Central Italy with sub-humid Mediterranean climate. Research has been focused on early competition for soil moisture between trees and the associated crops. Firstly, intercropping of walnut with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), as well as the effect of mulching with plastic film was studied during the first four years. Mulching was extremely effective in decreasing negative competition of alfalfa on walnut. Mulched-intercropped walnut had much higher predawn and midday water potentials and gravimetric soil moisture than unmulched-intercropped trees during observed mid-summer periods. However, mulched-intercropped walnut had much lower stem growth rates than the control (sole-unmulched walnut). In a second experimental field, early intercropping of walnut with subclover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and mulching were studied. Although mulched walnut intercropped with subclover had lower mid-summer midday water potential values than the control during the first four growing seasons, stem growth rates of the first treatment were constantly higher than the latter. During the fifth season, observations were also made on photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration and hydraulic conductance of walnut. Variations of these parameters within subclover intercropping treatments and connection with walnut growth are discussed.
