Abstract: In the Southern Peru and Northern Chile region, stratified clouds originate in winter over the Pacific Ocean and produce advective and orographic fog, that constitutes the main water resource of the coastal ecosystems. In the hills of Mejia (Arequipa), the vegetation is steppic-like, with scattered trees. These formations (Lomas) are extremely degraded because of past and present overgrazing and the recent negative trend of precipitation. The European Union funded a multidisciplinary project having the final aim to check the rehabilitation chances of the Lomas ecosystem through reforestation supported by fog-water. Site suitability towards fog collection was checked via using Standard Fog Collectors. Once selected the test-site, an research station was built up consisting of fog collectors, reservoirs, a drip irrigation system, a nursery, an equipped experimental plot. A set of both native and exotic species was tested in a plantation trial. Growth and survival of trees have been monitoring since July ’96. Side-researches were performed, i.e. “lomas” vegetation typology, stand structure and hydrology of Caesalpinia spinosa forest relicts, fog-capturing capacity by juvenile/mature trees, micro-environment conditions. The site of Mejía showed a very high performance in term of fog-water collection. The cost of water was, all included, 0.8 US$ / m3. So far, fog can be regarded as potential water resource for domestic, agriculture/forestry purposes if no other water sources are available. Native trees and shrubs survive just by using fog-water. Reforestation without irrigation support gave unsatisfactory results. On the other hand, irrigation support can be stopped after two years. i.e. until when height and branching complexity is rather sufficient for fog self-collection by trees.
