Abstract: An intensive monitoring program of selected forest ecosystems has been designed and it is currently being implemented in Tuscany, Central Italy. The program has been developed jointly by resource managers, scientists and experts. Broadly, the aim of the program is to acquire basic data and information on components and processes within forest ecosystems in Tuscany and on their exposure and responsivennes to environmental stressors. To accomplish this tasks, care has been devoted to the selection of the intensive monitoring sites, to the identification of the indicators to be used in the program and to the Quality Assurance (QA) activities. The program incorporates a number of indicators and surveys aimed to quantify with known confidence the biological status of the target ecosystems. Therefore the whole program consists of a series of sub-programs: i) tree condition and phenology, ii) crown productivity, iii) vegetation survey, vegetation dynamics, iv) biodiversity, v) soil nutritional status, vi) foliar symptoms and nutritional status, vii) deposition chemistry, viii) ozone biomonitoring and ix) manipulation experiments. Additional measurements (e.g. meteorology) are performed in individual plots. Assessment and measurement of the various indicators considered here are carried out on a series of sample plots devoted to different intensity level of monitoring. This paper describes conceptual, methodical and operative basis of the Tuscany program as well as some of the results obtained after the first months of full functioning of the program.
